Remnant 2 | Xbox Game Pass Review cloudgaming

December 31st, 2023

Remnant 2, the post-apocalyptic survival game comes to Microsoft Xbox Game Pass with cloudgaming. In this Xbox Game Pass review, we take a look at Remnant 2, its game play and if it’s worth your bandwidth.

Referred to as a Soulslike genre, you play as “The Traveller” and are thrust into a deserted city and must work together with your accomplices to survive. Players will need to discover and collect loot to restore health, reload and customise weapons. These items can be found scattered around the city or retrieved from downed enemies.

Fans of The Last Of Us franchise may feel at home with Remnant 2, as the characteristics of the two protagonists offer an undeniable similarity. Also familiar are the mysterious and dangerous creatures that plague the players path as they explore the deserted world.

Remnant 2 may not be suitable for you if you are a tree hugger.

These evil creatures are known as the Root, which are pretty much evil trees. They appear from dark crevices and their environments are often surrounded by other decaying trees.

Players of the Dark Souls series may see similarities here. The game gets progressively harder with enemies becoming stronger as players progress. Resources are limited and will need to be used strategically to survive. Similar to Dark Souls gameplay, players will need to analyse enemies in boss battles to time their attack and avoid damage.

Techniques at players disposal to survive include crouching, running and dodge rolling. Refreshingly, your accomplices in combat actually hit the enemies they are trying to shoot, making your gaming experience much more enjoyable. Your allies will also help to revive you if you are downed in combat.

When you enter Ward 13, the first base, you will meet characters who will help you on your journey. Some will provide you extra weapons and some will help you upgrade your existing artillery, such as building incendiary bullets to set your enemies on fire.

You will get the option to choose from being a medic, a sniper, a berserker, or a handler, who gets to play with a dog. Each option comes with different play characteristics, so you will be able to make a choice most suitable to your play style.

The scenery in Remnant 2 is similar to that of a survival horror or suspenseful thriller. The lighting is dark, giving the suspense that an enemy may jump out at any moment. For me, I had to adjust the brightness on my screen to see certain areas.

While Remnant 2 offers and engaging story line and suspenseful gameplay, there are some downfalls. The games mechanics feels unresponsive and laggy at times, particularly when waiting for a next action from an NPC. For example, if you pick up a health pack before prompted in the opening level, you will notice a delay from your accomplice.

Other areas of improvement could be interactions with opening doors and the speed of which players can dodge enemy attacks.

Overall, Remnant 2 is an enjoyable game and a good alternative choice to The Last Of Us for players who do not have access to a PlayStation. The gameplay is immersive and has a compelling storyline to keep players engaged.

7.5/10
